Optics Lab

In this lab, optical fabrication and testing takes place. It is currently being run by world-class optician, Dave Hilyard, and assisted by Brian Dupraw.

In 2006, the Optics and Instrument Shops re-aluminized the 120" mirror of the Shane Telescope at Lick Observatory. See the step-by-step report here.

Dave and Brian travel to Mt. Hamilton on a regular basis to assess and clean the optics, not just on the telescopes but on all of the instruments as well. See the reports here.


UC Observatories (UCO) is a multicampus astronomical research unit that serves eight UC campuses.

We operate the Lick Observatory, the UCO technical labs at UC Santa Cruz and UCLA, and we are a managing partner of the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. UCO is also the center for the UC participation in the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project.
