The the most up-to-date study of "Physical interventions to
interrupt or reduce the spread of respiratory viruses"
(e.g. COVID-19) -
the
Cochrane study - concludes:
-
With moderate certainty, wearing masks probably makes little
or no difference to the outcome of influenza-like illness
(ILI).
There is no clear reduction in respiratory viral infection
with the use of medical/surgical masks.
-
With low-certainty, hand hygiene is likely to modestly (11-14
per cent) reduce the burden of respiratory illness. However,
high heterogeneity and poor compliance are likely to make these
estimates upper limits.
-
With low-certainty, there are no clear differences between
the use of medical/surgical masks compared with N95/P2
respirators.
These outcomes vindicate the arguments of some professional healthcare
workers even since before the onset of COVID-19 mask covering mandates:
Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference
to the outcome compared to not wearing masks.
Hand hygiene may be beneficial with relative
reduction of respiratory illness, but with high heterogeneity.
