On Tuesday evening, San Jose City Council voted to allow the building of
new electronic billboards, each measuring 1000 square feet, along Highway
101 on Mineta San Jose International Airport property. Within minutes of
the vote, in salute to the City for its long support of efforts to reduce
light pollution, Lick Observatory observed minor planet 6216, named for
the city San Jose, California, as it moved against the background stars.
Lamentably, such observations are increasingly
difficult to perform against a burgeoning background of light pollution.
