Off-topic: While not exactly variable radix counting, I read a book
called "A computer called LEO" about the first commercial use of
computers in the Lyons Tea Shops chain in the UK. One of the special
gadgets that computer had was a multi-radix adder for dealing with
the quaint coinage in UK at the time.
The book is highly recommended.
