Cradle to hold DEIMOS as it turns Cradle to hold DEIMOS as it turns The shell which will contain all of the DEIMOS components will rotate within and be supported by this cradle structure.

The disk which will be fixed to the end of the shell will support a majority of the weight of the instrument while it rotates. It must be precisely machined and aligned so the axis of the spectrograph won't move while it turns. Here we can see various steps in the process as they are done by the experts at L&F Industries. Big Wheels keep it turning... Big Wheels keep it turning... Big Wheels keep it turning... The whole DEIMOS spectrograph will rotate to counteract the field rotation that is a result of tracking with an Alt-Az mounting. Here are the wheels that will carry the load.

The cradle and spectrograph housing are now in our Instrument Shop high-bay, and the drive has been attached allowing motor control of rotation. The various pieces of the instrument are being attched as they are fabricated.
