Attendees: Dave Cowley, Carol Harper, Ken Dietsch, Jack Osborne, Jeff Lewis, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Kirk Gilmore, Vern Wallace, Jerry Cabak, Heather Mietz, Drew Phillips, Dave Hilyard
**Dave did not proof these minutes (these are posted with his approval however)
1. Next Meeting:
September 20, 2001 at 10:30
The Readiness Review went well. The minutes are not out yet.
The Pre-ship Review is scheduled for Monday September 24th Tuesday September 25th. Dan Fabricant, the chair, will be present along with six others including Dave Sprayberry and Hilton Lewis.
Dave Cowley will lead the Pre-ship Review and Sandy will be there to field questions.
2. CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.
Mosaic:
Sandy and Kirk started the metrology on "dressed CCDs".
CCDs and moly blocks were put together to test height and tilt. It tested 9 and 1 spare was already tested with other blue one.
Three have serious tilt. The other six are okay. Kirk gave 14-4-3 - 36.9 = RMS value to Dave Hilyard. There is a little gouge on the pad. Dave H. has the worst 3 and the spare. This will be looked at later today.
We'll retest next week. We'll need to reassess the other six at that time.
Sandy will have the Excel spreadsheet from Kirk with results by the end of next week.
Backplane:
New holes are being installed. Kirk will get it Monday and recheck. If they check out, he'll install the engineering mosaic, to make sure the bumpers are okay and all looks good. Kirk will confer with Drew on this.
Controllers:
We have four packaged FC devices. They will be tested with the lab controller next week.
Two Andover quotes and one for ZC&R are at the business office. We will get P0s at the end of next week.
Mosaic building will be done around October 8th. This date should be fine.
The lab controller is essentially the same as the FCS controller on DEIMOS (Bob). All wiring, etc. is done.
3. Software
Grating select software is operating under keyword control and GUI. Drew says it works.
The hatch is also operating under keyword control and GUI.
The last three temperature loggers have been installed.
We received an updated DS9 yesterday and started on new tests.
De is working on the observer's GUI.
Dean is working on the environmental keyword.
Will integrated the rotation software to Keck via simulator.
4. Electronics (Barry)
We have a long punch list and the electronics lab is working on making it shorter.5. Optics
Filters - 3 P0s have been written and they will be sent out once the P0 is placed. We won't have these filters until the instrument is torn down.6. Testing
Bob says a number of tests were not running and there is not much time. We are running all stages, but this doesn't answer the question on repeatability.
The slitmask mechanism seems to work but what about the repeatability of insert at various position angles?
There will be other systems as well before pre-ship.
How can we get these in? Dave Cowley needs to address this daily. A planning meeting is needed today.
Flexure - Sliders 3 & 4 seemed to depend on which position angles damped to. When switched to 0°, larger flexure results, which is a concern. Flexure compensation will be difficult based on these results. Vern is waiting for data from Bob. He has it now in a hand out plotted in color on a chart.
Bob suggests that something is not seating properly to Sandy.
The grating slider mechanism speed is an issue. We are a long way from the original spec of 30 seconds. From slider 2 to 4, it is taking 220 seconds. We hope to fix this by tonight.
Availability of test time needs to be carefully scheduled.
An anomaly showed up on Tuesday. There is intermittent CCD shutter problems when trying to close. If it won't close command to open then close, then it actually closes. Barry will look into this.
Sandy made a memo of tests at all stages. Drew is to get this out of Sandy's Unix account. We will talk about this after the meeting.
TV testing should be included in the planning meeting.
6. Mechanical (Jeff)
Nose Area/Cladding:
This is being worked on.
Baffling:
The slitmask form now has holes for baffling. Carol is finishing the drawing now.
Interface Panel:
The hardware is completed. The connector drawings will come from Barry, and the glycol lines are done.
Flexure:
Not discussed here.
Trolley:
This has been started and will be done soon. We will work through the weekend on it.Grating System (Jack):
The chain has been loosened. We want to run velocity tests before Bob gets to it.Renishaw:
This has been fixed. We flattened it.8. Alignment
Drew's tests show an 11-pixel jump in slider 2 from different nights. We are unsure what was different. 5 pixels could be hysteresis. Where did the jump come from?
We need to clamp and unclamp and come at it from the same direction without rotation. We will deal with this at the planning meeting for testing.
Nothing new was learned about the tent mirror and collimator. We have nearly met requirements for pupil catering. It's a possibility that we might not have to touch tent mirror or collimator.
Grating alignment - 900 line is standard, and we want 600 and 1200 to match. Jack calibrated this and is ready. This will be done during the day next week. Do 900, 1200 then 600 in order.
9. Site Report
No call came through.
Dave Cowley will kick off the meeting on Tuesday for shutdown. We are on schedule. The platform is being reinforced now. The extension will be put on in mid-September.
The deck will be reinforced in early October.
On September 20th, Bill Mason from Keck might be here for the trolley.
Hilton requested a sub roster for the pre-ship. Bob says this won't happen until after pre-ship.
10. Web Report (Heather)
Nothing new has been done.11. Commissioning
Vibration dampers have been ordered. Jerry got crates for the camera.
Sal has been given all the information and inventory needed for insurance.
Jerry is working on the container now.
Bob will be shipping computers on December 3rd. We'll deal with shipping, not Bob.
12. Schedule
Pre-ship is September 24th & 25th.
Tear down is October 8th.
DEIMOS leaves here October 31st. November 8th it will be in Hawaii. On November 15th it will be lifted into the dome.
The first light is February 28th.
