DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
Date
(07/17/01)
Attendees: Dave Cowley, Dave Hilyard, Heather Mietz, Vern Wallace, Carol Harper, De Clarke, Kirk Gilmore, Matt Radovan, Jerry Cabak, Barry Alcott, Ken Dietsch, Sandy Faber, Bob Kibrick, Chris Wright, Drew Phillips
1. Next Meeting:
August 2nd, 10:30 a.m.
2. CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.
CCDs:
We received the next distribution. We need to choose two from here. Kirk evaluated them under the microscope. In general, they are all cosmetically good. There are no coating issues, but have a standard overlap problem.
Sandy and Kirk are starting on metrology of red array next week.
Bob received the updated copy of MIT/Lincoln Lab CCDs, which describes the power up/down procedures, which are different than what we are doing. Bob is looking into it with MIT/Lincoln Labs. It was updated between the last copy and this copy. They say that we can’t do the power down with our power monitor board.
Controllers:
Kirk: There is a problem with the FC evaluation. It has something to do with the software. It needs to be ported over. The VME crate that was returned has no boards. We have to resolve this soon in order to do the FC evaluation.
Ken has installed clear panels to make more secure, and he fixed power cables so they no longer pull free.
Dewar:
Terry has a near complete LN2 can. He welded and leak tested both cans; both are being polished. These will be assembled in two weeks.
3. Software (Bob)
De started slit mask testing. Three complete cycles were run last night. Two insertion and removals and 8 position angles (limited). She inspected slit mask for flange issues – some indication but did 2 more limited tests. There was no indication after these 2 tests.
These masks have an excess of 200 cycles on them. Mask life is limited; other changes to delrin difficult. It is thought that mask life is limited to approximately 150 uses.
Sandy says we are not doing anything right away, but a meeting to discuss this issue should convene soon. Also, order a selection of materials to make masks of.
De saw some aluminum “dandruff” last night – not bar code label. We need to do clean up to see where we stand to assess the situation. Then we need to do a 180-degree PA insertion to test.
Barcode (De): There are two issues with them.
1. They don’t stand up well with the forced roller-spread and tear. They did well when it was relieved. Sandy says let’s wait to do more since they are working now. We are changing the roller but it is not a priority.
Software – There was a timing problem with the buffer not getting all of the messages so successes might read as failures.
2. Labels are supposed to have “permanent” adhesive but De could peel them up with her fingernail. The real test will be on stainless.
Dean trying to wrap up keyword clean up on slit mask. There is a problem with serial buffer overflow. Dean is looking into it. He should be done tomorrow. So, Dean isn’t finished and therefore hasn’t started grating software yet.
FCS image acquisition: We have the first stage of this regimen. We are trying to get pixel measurements for flexure via cross-correlation, but issues with the algorithm have come up. We have data, and a prototype trying to figure out algorithm. Sandy and Drew are to see Molly today.
Steve is done with Lickserv coding changes and is debugging.
Will is working on rotation. He is working with Carmen on graphs. Will is working towards getting precision level tests for absolutes.
Safety issues: The LN2 line was attached when De was starting her tests. This is bad; the instrument needs to be rotation-ready. Dave will look into this.
Long term- CARA wants their emergency stop system to fit into DEIMOS’s rotation. This will be a future item to discuss.
Sandy: There should be some health and safety script to outline what’s on and off. Bob has something now that’s not complete. It can be run, but if power is not connected, it won’t help much.
*Overall, we need to discuss these things with the instrument shop. A meeting is scheduled for Friday at 9 am to discuss these issues with all parties.
4. Electronics (Barry)
Carol: The photometrics camera is up and working.
Ken mounted the cradle and barrel temperature sensors.
Barry is rewiring grating tilt #3. It will need to be tested (cut cables to length).
Grating tilt #4 is being worked on. It will be done today.
CARA will require hardware cut out for the barrel. The emergency power shutoff @ Keck would need cable added to the rotation controller bundle and interlock box. This will take effort to do; do we need to? Barry to do cost/time/item estimates of this job and give to Dave and Sandy.
Punch list has been updated on the web.
Documentation has also been updated.
Ken has built the UPS connector and Bob has checked it out.
5. Optics
The 6-1/2” square has been cut to 6-1/4”. (filters)
Round 7” needs PO# (been placed) for coating.
Adhesives test is on hold. We are getting info from Andover. A new test kit will be ordered.
6. Mechanical
Nose:
Nothing new
Slit Mask:
Covered under “software”.
Calibration System/FC Light System:
Spots are fainter by a factor of 10. This needs to be figured out.
Cladding:
Continues slowly.
Baffling, Glycol, Air System, Interface Panel: :
Nothing new.
Grating System:
Three, four and five have been rebuilt. Three and four are ready to go back in. Slider 4 saw more hysteretic motion.
This should be operational on Thursday.
Flexure:
Already discussed.
TV system:
Already discussed.
Trolley (Matt):
Will transverse 127”. Mounting rail material is coming today.
Stress on kinematics is heavy. A longer ramp is being made. It needs to be machined and heat-treated. So, this is a critical path. We can’t kinematically locate until this is completed.
How will it mount in High Bay? This is being worked on. We can use the old tractor in the test; the new one is not done yet.
Rigging equipment is needed to jack it up. Matt wants to build the hardware. CARA needs it now to move DEIMOS.
We will be very close to meeting July 30 date, except for tractor and steering. But we will be able to lower DEIMOS onto rails close to July 30.
7. Alignment
Nothing new
8. Testing
Already discussed.
9. Site Report
Greg was not available to comment.
The Readiness Review has been moved to August 22/23. This is pretty solid, so airline tickets are being bought.
10. Web Report (Heather)
A “commissioning link” has been added to the site. The shipping schedule will be added as well. Readiness and Pre-Ship dates are posted. Heather can add other links to punchlists, etc. Please give her feedback as to what you want on site.
A draft of the logo has been made.
The next team meeting will be posted right away, so look there for next meeting date and time.
