2. CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.
Detectors (Kirk):
The silicon aluminum offsets have been measured accurately and there was in fact a severe offset. On one side, there are 330 microns, whereas the other side overhangs +200 microns over aluminum nitride. The other various overhangs are A+ quality. This is problematic, so one plan would be to put the mosaic together using a microscope and a TV screen.
Terry and Kirk are now discussing the modifications of the backplane. They will use a 1 mm shim on the connector end. On the short end, they will use bumpers no closer than 100 microns.
The current blue backplane has bumper holes on it. The placement is correct, but holes were not big enough. Jeff will run through "NC" to make clean cuts.
One Lot 14 foot needs work. It was tested by gluing technology in engineering. CCD rather than just sending back. This worked good so Kirk will do one the Lot 14 one.
Dust contamination in the CCD lab seems to be a problem. Talked to Richard Stover and will find a solution.
Controllers (Chris):
There is nothing new since the last report and everything is up and running.
Chris will take images with and without the ion pumps and he will let Sandy know of the results.
Sandy would like to hold a meeting on handling procedures due to the loss of the B amplifier. This meeting should be held before we handle the Lot 14 devices. For the meeting, we should write a step-by-step checklist. Before working on the dewar, a procedure for handling the dewar also needs to be formalized.
Sandy says we will not remove the blue detector until after the preship review.
VME Crate (Bob):
We received two more Motorola boards, and after testing the boards they still seem to fail as they did before. Also they are still not as fast as expected. Bob contacted Motorola and Tundra but got no response so far. He also put a hold on the purchase order until these problems are solved. Since these products were recommended by CARA, the only other option we have is if we find another vendor with CARA/Motorola coverage.
Dewar:
Nothing new.3. Software (Bob)
VME crate software: Steve and Bob completed with new CCD keywords. Bob will finish the video offsets, temperature, etc. this week.
Deitrader (ultra 10 machine Solaris 2.8) machine crashes when running software (CARA configured). Bob is in the process of configuring this.
Upgraded Celeste with Solaris 2.8, and many things went wrong. De and Steve are currently working on it, and they're almost done. We will know today if it is 2.8.
Will is working on the rotator to achieve keyword control. He will also test this tonight as much as possible every night this week. Will might turn this over to De at the end of this week.
Dean is not making much progress due to his surgery, but he came in today to discuss scheduling for the next couple of weeks. The slit mask scissors is available this afternoon to work on after this meeting. Jeff says the slit mask is rotating constantly because of the grating, but it can be worked on for about 3-4 hours at a time. Bob and Dave to discuss but we need to pull when done.
4. Electronics (Ken)
The dummy filters are installed in the TV filter and it is all up on the web. The TV PW was tuned and the orange electronic box was mounted.
Holes were drilled for the panic switches and these switches have been installed. Controller #2 analog board was relocated and tested.
The block diagram for the slit mask and rotation stages have been made.
Carol Harper is building new CCD cables and the slit mask stage software control is now being tested. The circuit breaker box is being reworked and the over-temperature boxes are being connected to AC wiring.
The spare DEIMOS rotation fiducials needs testing, and Ken is creating the inventory control database in MS Access.
The rotation stage and limit switches are being reworked.
5. Optics (Dave H.)
Dave received material from Howard Glass this week and he is now working on curing cements. Failures have been withstanding heat to de-laminate at 200 degrees C. This might be acceptable, but he will verify.
The cementing jig is to be made by the Instrument shop.
6. Mechanical (Jeff)
Nose Area:
The nose area will be reassembled by this week, possibly tomorrow (Tuesday). The first priority is to put the scissor jack back on the instrument.
Slit Mask:
The slit mask system will be disassembled this week for reworking. This should not take long to put back on when modifications are completed.Calibration System:
The calibration system will go back on the instrument this week. The modifications are completed. Sandy and Matt will discuss what was done with the calibration system and it won't be put back on until Jeff talks with Matt.FC Light System:
The fibers are on the bench, and Matt will do some flexure tests with Drew. When completed, Matt wants to run this system. Sandy says that next week Matt will need 2 hours to install this. The parts are already made.Cladding:
Matt Thompson is continuing to work on the cladding as time permits.Baffling:
We now have the wood for prototyping, and that will be completed today.Glycol Cooling:
The PC's have been ordered.Grating System:
Slider #3 is being tested now and the shaft has been changed. A dummy grating is in to increase weight.Flexure:
Nothing new.Instrument Trolley System (Vern):
Vern is in the process of working on this and he has drawings for Keck to review. He also ordered a gear box and is looking at rail systems.
*Weight: we order 3 20000 pound cells accurate to +/- one pound today. When lower on tracks will weigh 1month from now.

Greg is not on the phone, but we got remarks to site visit notes. Weight is a concern. There is no more than 18,000 pounds. Jerry is looking at shipping but also looking at these weight issues. There is a list of what certain parts weigh and what should be weighed.
There will be two bi-weekly conference calls. Kyle was contacted and drawings were traded.
10. Web Report (Heather)
The minutes will be completely up to date on the web by early next week.
The pictures for the web are also done, except that Heather needs another hour or so to finish up. These new images will be done to create links.
11. Shipping/Travel
Camera: Engineering is looking at cases (Jerry got "hardy" engineering to look at), and Sandy will be discussing with Jerry more about the camera on Thursday at 9 a.m. in this conference room.
Matson: We are still in the process of getting a truck quote from Santa Cruz to Port of Oakland. We will hopefully have the rack here by June 1.
Insurance: Heather will send Sal an email about when we will be seeing some quotes. We also need to check up on quotes for a truck in Hawaii and parking spots.
Military: They cannot compete with a commercial carrier for the camera. We will review this further, but we're not hopeful.
Cranes: PO's are set up for King Crane. We are waiting for files from Kyle for #1 and quote information for the crane set up in Hawaii. We are also going to set up a site visit for any date changes we need to make.
Schedules: Heather will be circulating a schedule with preferences. These must be given back to Heather by April 30. Bob will talk to Dave at software about schedule changes. DEIMOS will be working by the end of this month. The grating is still a challenge, so it's first priority. Keyword control for slit mask and the grating is also top on the list as well.
12. Schedule
The goal at the end of the month is to get the spectrograph up and working. Another challenge is working extensively on the grating system so it will be ready by the preship review in June.
