DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
Date: 2-5-01
Attendees: Dave Cowley, Heather Mietz, Sandy Faber, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Kirk Gilmore, Dave Hilyard, Ken Dietsch, Chris Wright, Jeff Lewis, Dean Tucker, Bob Kibrick, Matt Radovan, Drew Phillips
1. Next Meeting:
February 22, 9:30 am PST
2. CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.
Controllers:
Chris received 4 Leach boards and verified that they are good. Putting the boards in was a problem, but now the system is up and running at 16 amps. Only 1 VME interface board is reading, and Bob Leach is aware of this. We will be receiving 2 additional boards as spares.
CCDs:
There are 2 outstanding devices for the red mosaic.Mosaic:
Per Kirk, all 8 CCDs that have been allocated are in the clean room.
The discrepancy that occurs when moving the measurement stage up and down is being investigated.
Evaluation of FC devices for the red mosaic is underway. We have 20 that haven't been diced. We are going back to spares and making sure the configuration is the same as the good ones.
Dewar:
Terry Pfister had the mechanics apart and measured 4.5 thousandths flexure (the stage could be deflected by hand). We found loose screws and replaced some bars (from aluminum to stainless steel). The dewar is now reassembled. Tests to ensure there are no more issues with the dewar will be run. The dewar will be in the CCD lab before the end of February.3. Software
Per Dean, the grating tilt code will be available to test later today. Dean is working on the slit mask insert this week as well.
Bob received the computer "DEI" replacement from CARA. Steve and De are learning about the new version of Solaris that will run on the replacement computer (the 32 bit to 64 bit was a problem). "Celeste" needs to be upgraded eventually.
Steve has overcome the lickserv issues with the DS9/image problems. He came up with a workaround by putting the image in shared memory to increase the speed.
De is working on the GUI, and it will be available for a review on February 20th at 2pm.
Manuals which contained VME bus and memory mapping info were obtained for the power PC boards.
Will was out ill for half the month, but the driver for the rotation motor does work. The motor is not in yet, however.
4. Electronics
Barry is working on Controller 0 and is half done.
Ted has finished the limit switches for the rotation cradle. He and Carol are working on cables for the camera (with 90 degree connectors).
Carol is experimenting with the CCD cables to increase flexibility without compromising a solid connection. She is also working on Grating tilt #4 with Dean.
Ken is working on the secondary limits on the stage and interlock switch.
5. Optics
Dave Hilyard made a small window for the Cohu. Measurements proved that the distance between elements 8 and 9 was short by 24.9 thousands of an inch.
Dave also made steel pads for the grating system - he has more to do.
6. Mechanical
Slit Mask:
Vern worked on the plunger retract issue and will make a drawing and test the part. Ken will deal with the barcode.Calibration System:
The quartz lamp issue is still open, but other than this, the calibration system is complete.FC Light System:
Matt needs to order another copper argon lamp. He says the fibers are OK, and he wants to make some stiffness measurements.Cladding:
Jeff started on the front end enclosure. A sample panel was made and works well. Matt Thompson is now back and is expected to help in this area.Glycol Cooling:
Jeff started on this, and parts should be in this week. We have the Keck connectors as well.Grating System (Jack):
Slider #2 was clamped successfully. 2 more sliders were put in and tested. Slider #3's plate design was started, but we are waiting for flexure measurements from Sandy.
Ken will look into writing scripts to test the clamping for 8 stages.
We need a decision on Slider #1 - to be discussed offline.
The switches were rewired, and the interlock was added.
Spaceframe (Plan B): Matt has the coordinates in a solid model for the hard points. There is some room to the left and right of the grating box as well.
Flexure:
Jack is finishing the drawings for the redesigned plates for the grating box. He will release them to Jeff tomorrow.7. Alignment
Nothing new.8. Testing
The current weight of DEIMOS is 16.5 thousand pounds. The limit on the platform is 11 tons (as we have heard). Kyle is talking to Steve M. about this limit for further clarification.9. Site Report
Bill Mason, Jim Bell, Dave Sprayberry and Hilton Lewis are coming tomorrow, February 6-8.10. Web Report (Heather)
Heather changed the SSC presentation materials so that the dates show up first (easier viewing). She needs to remove some budget information as well. The hard copy of a past SSC meeting presentation Sandy gave to her was scanned into text and posted as a pdf file.
Heather has some updated ideas for revising the DEIMOS site (to make it easier to keep current and less cumbersome to find things).
Heather will create a pxl image page for Jason.
11. Shipping/Travel
Dave needs to call Matson and get a meeting in place for he and Sandy. We also need to meet with Sal soon.12. Schedule
March 15 - the instrument needs to be together enough for images.
