Dear Colleagues,
I would like to provide you with an update on the protests regarding TMT construction on Mauna Kea, and progress in Hawaii. At the bottom of this message I have included a link to Hawaii Governor Ige's announcement from last Friday. The governor makes it clear that the project has the legal right to continue work, and describes several potential areas for compromise. However as of last Friday, the TMT leadership stated that construction will continue to be postponed.
The website http://www.maunakeaandtmt.org/news/ continues to be updated with information about the project and process in Hawaii, with links to balanced news stories about the project and the protests. As noted in my previous message to you, a native Hawaiian high-school student, Mailani Neal, has started a petition supporting TMT which you can find here.
I would like to reiterate that both TMT and UC Observatories have great respect for the special nature of Mauna Kea, and profound regard for Hawaii's culture, environment and people. We recognize the rights of everyone to express their views about TMT at Mauna Kea. I urge each of you to show this respect and regard in your communications about TMT.
Regards,
Claire Max
